For sites with strong currents of over 1.5 knots,
Kames have pioneered a special net support system that has become
an industry standard.
In
1996 Kames formed a partnership to install and operate a Sea
Bass and Sea Bream fish farm in Greece, in the island of Evia.
This was a full turnkey project in which experienced Kames personnel
were involved from the outset.
We were responsible for all the Site Surveys and documentation requirements
including all local planning applications. The site was exposed
and was a challenging project in which Kames pioneered the use of
large and small all plastic circular cages in this area, where the
wave height could be 3 metres.
Kames supplied, installed and commissioned all the equipment which
included 70 metre circumference Aquaflex triple ring cages, harvest
and fry cages, moorings, work boat, work raft with hydraulic crane
and power pack, nets and net washers. We also co-ordinated the development
of an onshore facility including offices, personnel accommodation,
food storage areas and all services.
Anemoessa continues to operate successfully under the management
of Kames Fish Farming.
Since
1991, Kames has been advising companies in Chile on cage and mooring
systems suitable for ongrowing Salmonids. In particular we have
provided package services to these companies to enable them to overcome
specific problems such as exposed sites, large wave heights typically
4-5 metres, strong currents at over 2 knots and the techniques required
to manage large low maintenance units.
In the 10th and 11th Regions of Southern Chile this involved the
design of cage units strong enough to withstand the rigours of the
marine climate in such remote areas. We designed and supplied fully
automated feeding systems; improving accuracy, reducing blockages
and including generator start up and shut down.
We supplied and commissioned ancillary equipment to aid cage and
net management such as hydraulic cranes, top net supports and cage
net support rings. Apart from site visits to Chile, Kames brought
Chilean personnel to Scotland to visit various cage sites and learn
about their operation.
Kames
has undertaken a full turnkey project in Scotland which operated
for over ten years producing over 1000 tonnes of Atlantic Salmon
a year from ova to market.
In sheltered and semi-exposed sites Kames pioneered the use
of large three-ring plastic cages on the West Coast. From the
site survey stage through all planning and licensing of the
final sites Kames provided the experienced personnel necessary
to get the project off the ground. Full start-up business plans
were provided along with ongoing financial and strategic consultancy
in all aspects of the business.
All the equipment was supplied and installed by Kames including
a 200 metre floating breakwater. We supplied all personnel for the
feeding, husbandry and harvesting on the farms and management and
staff to carry out the administration, marketing, sales and processing
of the final market product.
