Working at Kames

Kames is the UK’s largest Steelhead Trout production company, Scotland’s oldest family-owned aquaculture business, and our core values of Quality, Sustainability and Community are reflected in everything we do. We’re passionate about the exceptional quality of our fish and our team work hard to achieve our high standards of husbandry and welfare. We have a long-standing record of innovation, connection to academia and education, a belief in valuing people and knowledge alongside technology, and caring for our environment and our community. This is not just our workplace; it’s our home.

Everyone in our team obtains a broad range of experience and a holistic understanding of fish husbandry through our fully vertically integrated farm, giving them a level of skill and expertise that is hard to achieve in a bigger farm setting, as well as the opportunity to be a valued voice at the table.

Kames won Best Aquaculture Company in the UK in 2022 and Best Animal Welfare in 2023 at the industry awards. In 2025 we won two M&S Select Farmers Awards and an Outstanding Contribution to the Industry. Our founder Stuart Cannon also received an MBE for his services to sustainable development in Scottish aquaculture, a testament to the pioneering spirit that runs through Kames.

The normal hours of work are Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, with a 1 in 3 weekend rota. We offer a bonus scheme, pension, training and birthday off.

Farm Work

Learn fish husbandry from the best in the industry across both freshwater and sea sites. We have operations at Loch Melfort, Loch Craignish, Loch Tay, and Pooltiel, Skye, as well as several hatcheries around Scotland and North of England, and our own pioneering genetics programme.

Research & Development

We have strong ties with R&D centres and universities in Scotland and the UK, and have engaged in highly successful Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, keeping us at the heart of latest innovations.

Head Office

Our team has been based at Loch Melfort for 50 years and is very much the central hub of Kames activity. Our management, finance, administration, marketing and fish health departments operate from here, as well as our main hatchery.

Training & Experience

We regularly take on young starters, and see opportunity and potential in everyone regardless of experience. Lochgilphead High School voted us the Best Local Employer of 2022.
